Vaginismus is an involuntary tightening of the pelvic floor muscles around the vaginal opening, which can make penetration — a tampon, a smear test, intercourse — painful or impossible. It is a recognised, treatable condition, not imagined and not something a woman does on purpose: the tightening is a protective reflex, not a choice, which is why being told to relax has never helped anyone.
Telling vaginismus apart from other causes of painful sex matters, because treatment differs. Dryness after childbirth or at menopause causes burning friction that eases with lubrication and tissue care. A skin condition such as lichen sclerosus, or scarring from a tear or surgery, hurts at one point. Vaginismus feels different again: many women describe a wall, or a sense that there is nowhere for anything to go. These causes overlap, so an assessment looks for all of them.
Ask whether you need to be seen
Message us with what you are experiencing and we will tell you whether an examination is worth making, and what the appointment involves.
WhatsAppLINEWhat keeps it going is a cycle: an early experience of pain or fear teaches the body that penetration means harm, so the next attempt is met with anticipation, the muscles tighten before anything happens, and the expectation is confirmed. That is why willpower alone rarely works, and why treatment addresses body and anxiety together.
A first appointment at THE FIT CLINIC is a conversation. You will be asked gently when the difficulty began, what has been tried and what you would like to be able to do. Nothing is examined without your explicit consent, and declining any examination on a first visit is entirely acceptable. If an assessment is welcome it is done slowly, in stages you control, and stops when you ask.
Treatment combines several directions: pelvic floor work that teaches the muscles to release rather than strengthen, since the difficulty is excess tone; separate treatment of any dryness, thinning or tender scar; and graded desensitisation that rebuilds sensation in small steps at your own pace. Where anxiety is a major driver, working with a psychologist or sex therapist often makes the physical work possible.
THE FIT CLINIC is at EM Tower, EMSPHERE, by BTS Phrom Phong, open daily 10:00-19:00, no referral needed. Consultations are in English or Thai; an interpreter can be arranged in advance if you ask on LINE @thefitbkk when booking. Coming in to talk is enough to begin.
