Vaginal repair surgery — which repair, and is it the right one?

“Repair” is used for several different operations: repair of the vaginal walls, prolapse surgery, hymen repair and care after FGM. They treat different problems. Which one, if any, is right for you is decided after an examination at the clinic.

Four different operations under one word

“Vaginal tightening” is a marketing phrase covering at least four different problems that feel similar and are treated differently. Before comparing treatments it is worth knowing which one you have.

Surgery is generally reserved for prolapse or significant structural change, and usually after the non-surgical options have been tried. If a page offers you surgery for a symptom that has not been examined, that is a reason to get a second opinion. Non-surgical options compared

Vaginal wall repair (AP repair)

Anterior and posterior vaginal wall repair (AP repair) for a dropped bladder or rectum — Vimut and Praram 9, as a day case or with one night in hospital. Posterior repair alone — Vimut and Praram 9.

When the assessment finds more than one problem, they can be planned into a single operation where it is suitable — for example AP repair together with labiaplasty and cystoscopy (a camera check of the bladder), at Vimut Hospital.

Prolapse repair — and whether the uterus has to come out

Vaginal hysterectomy with repair of the vaginal walls and cystoscopy — Vimut Hospital, through the vagina, with no abdominal incision. vNOTES (keyhole surgery through the vagina, no abdominal incision) — Vimut and Praram 9.

Not everyone who is assessed needs an operation. Pelvic floor training and a pessary are discussed first where they fit, and the choice is yours. Prolapse surgery — do you have to lose your uterus?

Hymen repair

Hymen repair — Vimut Hospital, as a day case. How the result looks differs between individuals.

FGM care and defibulation

Defibulation (also called deinfibulation) is a short operation that opens the scar tissue covering the vaginal opening and the urethra in type III FGM. It is usually done under local or regional anaesthesia. FGM care and repair

We do not perform FGM of any type, on anyone, at any age, for any reason. We do not re-close a defibulated scar.

Who operates, and where

The surgeon is the specialist who assessed you. You are examined at the clinic, the options are explained there, and if an operation is the right choice it is done by the same doctor. See every surgeon's training and registration number: Pelvic surgery team

The partner hospitals are Praram 9 Hospital and Vimut Hospital. Which one is used depends on the operation planned, your surgeon's operating schedule and, where relevant, which hospital your insurance works with.

Depending on the operation and your assessment: local anaesthetic, intravenous sedation (TIVA), spinal anaesthesia, or general anaesthesia given by an anaesthetist. The cost is given to you in writing before you decide.

Before any operation

Risks, the hospital, the expected stay and the hospital's costs are explained before you decide. Results differ between individuals and no outcome is guaranteed.

What is vaginal repair surgery?

“Repair” is used for several different operations: repair of the vaginal walls (AP repair) for a dropped bladder or rectum, prolapse surgery, hymen repair and care after FGM. Which one, if any, is right for you is decided after an examination at the clinic.

Is surgery done at the clinic?

No. The clinic is where you are assessed and where the decision is made. Operations are done at Praram 9 Hospital or Vimut Hospital, which have operating theatres, anaesthetists and inpatient care.

Where is AP repair done in Bangkok?

Anterior and posterior vaginal wall repair is arranged at Vimut Hospital and Praram 9 Hospital, as a day case or with one night in hospital. Which one suits you is decided after assessment.

Can more than one problem be fixed in the same operation?

Where it is suitable, yes — for example vaginal wall repair together with labiaplasty and a camera check of the bladder. The surgeon decides this with you after the examination.

Will repair surgery make the vagina feel tighter?

Surgery is generally reserved for prolapse or significant structural change found on examination. A feeling of looseness can come from several different problems that are treated differently. Results differ between individuals and no outcome is guaranteed.
