A positive HPV test is a common source of anxiety, but a positive result does not mean an infection is here to stay. The immune system clears most HPV infections within one to two years with no treatment needed to reach that point — what your clinician is actually watching for is not the virus's presence today, but whether it persists across repeated tests.

Persistence, not the initial positive, is what raises risk. A single positive HPV test with no cell changes on the accompanying Pap smear is usually managed with a repeat test in twelve months rather than immediate treatment, because most of these clear on their own in that window. That is a genuinely different situation from HPV that remains detectable on two or more tests a year or more apart, or that comes with abnormal cervical cells — that combination is what leads to closer monitoring or a colposcopy referral.

The genotype matters too. Not every high-risk HPV type carries the same follow-up recommendation, and a lab report that only says "HPV positive" without specifying which type leaves out information your clinician needs. If you were tested elsewhere and only have a positive or negative result, it is worth asking whether genotyping was done, since it can change the recommended follow-up interval.

What this means practically: a positive result on its own is not something to act on urgently, but it is something to track properly rather than treat as one test to forget about. Bring any prior HPV or Pap results with you, whichever country they were done in, so follow-up can be based on your actual history rather than restarting the count from zero.
