HPV Vaccine Catch-Up for Adults: The Schedule If You Missed It Younger

Many people assume HPV vaccination is something you either did as a teenager or missed for good. In reality, adults who never started the series, or never finished it, can still catch up — the benefit simply depends on your own exposure history rather than your age alone.

The vaccine only protects against strains you have not yet been exposed to. Most women in their 30s and older have already encountered at least one HPV strain without knowing it, since the body clears most infections on its own. That still leaves the other covered strains worth protecting against, even though the overall benefit is smaller than vaccinating at a younger age.

Testing for HPV before vaccinating is not required. A positive result for one strain does not mean you would get no benefit from the strains the vaccine still covers. The adult catch-up schedule is three doses over six months. Whether or not you vaccinate, regular cervical screening still matters on its usual schedule, because the vaccine does not cover every high-risk strain.

Worth discussing with your doctor before deciding: your age, sexual history, and when you were last screened — together these decide whether catch-up vaccination makes sense for you specifically, rather than a blanket yes or no.
