Bacterial vaginosis and yeast infection are the two most common reasons for vaginal discomfort, and they are frequently confused with each other because both can bring discharge, odor changes, and irritation. The underlying cause is different in each: bacterial vaginosis is a shift in the normal balance of vaginal bacteria, typically producing a thin, grey discharge with a fishy odor that is often more noticeable after sex; a yeast infection is an overgrowth of candida, usually producing thick, white discharge with intense itching and little to no odor.

The treatments are opposites — an antifungal for yeast does nothing for a bacterial imbalance, and vice versa — which is exactly why an over-the-counter product chosen from symptoms alone so often fails to resolve things, or resolves them briefly before they return. Both conditions can also occur alongside other causes of irritation, including some sexually transmitted infections, which a self-treatment approach will not catch at all.

A short swab test, read in-clinic, distinguishes between the two reliably and rules out other causes in the same visit. This matters most for anyone who has already tried one over-the-counter treatment without lasting improvement, or who experiences these symptoms repeatedly, since repeated antifungal use without confirming the cause can itself disrupt the vaginal environment further.

At The Fit Clinic, 8F EM Tower EMSPHERE, Sukhumvit, Bangkok, a swab test gives a same-visit answer and a treatment matched to the actual cause. If symptoms have not cleared with an over-the-counter treatment, or keep returning, book a consultation via Line @THEFITBKK.
