Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is one of the most common reasons women see a gynecologist — and one of the most important not to dismiss. While many causes are benign hormonal fluctuations, AUB can also be the first sign of a condition requiring prompt treatment.

The patterns worth attention: periods lasting more than 7 days or requiring pad changes every 1–2 hours; cycles shorter than 21 days or longer than 35 days; bleeding or spotting between periods; bleeding after intercourse; and — most importantly — any bleeding after menopause is established (more than 12 months without periods). Postmenopausal bleeding is never normal and always warrants evaluation.

Possible causes range across hormonal imbalance, fibroids, endometrial polyps, endometrial hyperplasia, anovulation, infection, and, in a small but important fraction, endometrial or cervical cancer.
