Miscarriage occurs in roughly 1 in 4 recognised pregnancies — most in the first trimester. The most common cause is random chromosomal abnormality in the embryo, an event that cannot be prevented and is not the mother's fault. Knowing this fact does not erase grief, but it is foundational to healing.
Physical recovery: after miscarriage or D&C, periods typically return in 4–6 weeks. Physical rest and abstaining from intercourse for about 2 weeks is reasonable. Seek immediate care for fever, heavy bleeding (soaking more than a pad per hour), severe pain, or foul-smelling discharge. There is no medical need to delay trying again for a long time — most clinicians now advise waiting only until after one normal period if you feel ready.
Emotional recovery is its own journey. Sadness, guilt, anxiety, and grief can persist for months — they are not weakness. Some women benefit from formal counselling or peer support groups. At THE FIT CLINIC we provide comprehensive post-miscarriage care: physical follow-up, investigation of causes for recurrent loss (3 or more), guidance for next pregnancy attempts, and referral to mental health support when needed. You are not alone in this — and reaching out is part of healing, not failure.
