Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common hormonal disorder in reproductive-age women, affecting roughly 1 in 10. Its three defining features are irregular menstrual cycles, elevated androgens (causing acne, excess facial or body hair, or scalp hair thinning), and polycystic-appearing ovaries on ultrasound. Diagnosis requires two of the three — not all women with PCOS have visible ovarian cysts.
The consequences extend well beyond fertility. PCOS is closely linked to insulin resistance, weight that resists loss, type 2 diabetes risk, abnormal cholesterol, and elevated long-term cardiovascular risk. Early diagnosis and management dramatically reduce these downstream risks. PCOS also has substantial mental health impact — depression and anxiety rates are higher than in the general population.
At THE FIT CLINIC we take a comprehensive approach: complete hormonal and metabolic workup, individualised nutrition and exercise programming, medications such as metformin or inositol when appropriate, and contraceptive choices that simultaneously regulate cycles and reduce androgen symptoms. For women trying to conceive, we coordinate ovulation induction. PCOS is lifelong but manageable — with the right plan, most women feel meaningfully better within 6 months.
