Vaginal yeast infection is the most common gynecologic infection — about 75% of women experience at least one in their lifetime. But for the 5–8% of women who get more than four per year (Recurrent Vulvovaginal Candidiasis, or RVVC), the problem is not just inconvenient — it is a chronic condition requiring proper investigation, not just another over-the-counter cream.

The underlying drivers of recurrence include non-albicans Candida species (which are resistant to standard antifungals), undiagnosed diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance, frequent antibiotic use, immune compromise, high oestrogen states (combined contraceptives, pregnancy), vaginal microbiome disruption, chronic stress, and tight non-breathable clothing. Treating the immediate infection without addressing the driver guarantees return.

At THE FIT CLINIC, evaluation begins with vaginal culture to identify the actual species — not just assume albicans — and screening for diabetes and other contributors. Treatment typically involves a longer course of antifungal therapy (often 6 months of suppressive treatment to fully clear the organism) alongside addressing whichever underlying factor is in play. Probiotics and microbiome support can help selected women. With proper investigation and treatment, most women with RVVC become symptom-free and stay that way.
