Osteoporosis is a silent disease — it produces no symptoms until a bone breaks. Statistics are sobering: 1 in 3 postmenopausal women will sustain an osteoporotic fracture, hip fractures in older women carry a 20% one-year mortality rate, and many survivors lose independent mobility permanently. The good news is that osteoporosis is preventable and treatable when caught early.

DEXA (Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is the gold-standard test. It takes 15 minutes, requires no preparation, is painless, and uses very low-dose radiation. Results are reported as a T-score comparing your bone density to a healthy young adult. T-scores between -1.0 and -2.5 indicate osteopenia (low bone mass), while scores below -2.5 indicate osteoporosis and warrant active treatment.

Who should be screened: all women aged 65 and older, plus postmenopausal women under 65 with risk factors (low body weight, smoking, long-term steroid use, family history, or early menopause). At THE FIT CLINIC we combine DEXA with vitamin D, calcium, and hormonal evaluation to design a comprehensive prevention plan. For women with established osteoporosis, modern medications can substantially reduce fracture risk. Bone health is one of the highest-impact, lowest-effort preventive investments after age 50.
