Uterine fibroids — benign smooth-muscle tumours of the uterus — are extraordinarily common, present in 40–60% of women by age 35. Many cause no symptoms and require no treatment. Others produce heavy menstrual bleeding, severe period pain, pelvic pressure, urinary frequency, or fertility difficulties. The traditional response was hysterectomy, but modern care offers many uterus-preserving alternatives.

Non-surgical options have expanded dramatically. The Mirena hormonal IUD is used to reduce menstrual bleeding. GnRH analogues and ulipristal acetate shrink fibroids medically. High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) ablates fibroids through the skin without an incision. Uterine Artery Embolisation (UAE) blocks fibroid blood supply through a small catheter in the groin. For women who do need surgery, myomectomy preserves the uterus while removing fibroids.

At THE FIT CLINIC, evaluation begins with detailed ultrasound or MRI to map fibroid number, size, and location. From there we discuss every option — including doing nothing if symptoms permit. The right answer depends on your specific fibroids, your symptoms, and whether you wish to preserve fertility. Modern fibroid care is highly individualised; one-size-fits-all hysterectomy is no longer the standard.
